SpaceX has reportedly lifted the restrictions on the Ukrainian military's use of Starshield, the military-grade variant of its Starlink internet constellation. According to The Wall Street Journal, Defense Minister Evgeniy Khmara confirmed that the system appears to be functioning normally again, although the military is still conducting verification tests. Notably, the Ukrainian forces have not yet received a formal explanation from SpaceX regarding the sudden imposition and subsequent lifting of these access limitations.
The restoration of service follows a critical ten-day period during which Ukrainian drones experienced significant connectivity losses when flying at speeds of approximately 100 miles per hour. This technical throttling resulted in a loss of control for several unmanned aerial vehicles, while others were forced to fly at reduced speeds, thereby increasing their vulnerability to enemy interception. The disruption posed a severe tactical risk to the Ukrainian front lines, which rely heavily on real-time data links for drone operations.
Diplomatic sources indicate that President Donald Trump intervened directly in the matter, calling SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday to request the immediate restoration of Starshield services. This development occurs against a backdrop of public friction between Musk, Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Musk recently posted on social media that Zelensky has 'gone too far,' reflecting a broader strain in relations between the tech magnate and the Ukrainian leadership.
Previously, it was reported that Musk ordered the throttling of Ukraine’s Starlink access, claiming that Ukraine had violated the terms of service by using the network for offensive drone strikes. Musk emphasized the strategic importance of the infrastructure, stating, 'Were Starlink to be turned off, the Ukrainian front line would collapse immediately. This is NOT a threat, it is simply a statement of fact.' The incident highlights the growing geopolitical significance of private space infrastructure in modern warfare.
