Global Measles Resurgence Highlights Gaps in Childhood Vaccination
A new global analysis released by the 2023 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Measles Collaboration reveals a startling reversal of a decades‑long decline in measles incidence. In 2023, almost 16 million children under five contracted measles, and 118 000 of them died, marking the highest mortality in a generation. The study combined national surveillance reports, vaccination registries and statistical modelling to estimate infection rates and vaccine coverage. It found that children in South Asia and sub‑Saharan Africa are markedly less likely to receive the recommended two‑dose schedule of the measles vaccine (MMR) than peers elsewhere, leaving large immunity gaps. "The resurgence is not a random blip; it reflects systemic failures in routine immunisation programmes, exacerbated by the COVID‑19 pandemic," said Dr. Emily Chen, lead author of the report. "Where two‑dose coverage fell below 70 %, outbreaks surged, overwhelming already fragile health systems." Public‑health experts warn that the growing pool of susceptible children could seed regional epidemics, strain hospital capacity and reverse gains made against other vaccine‑preventable diseases. The authors call for urgent catch‑up campaigns, stronger supply chains for the measles vaccine, and integration of measles surveillance into COVID‑19 recovery efforts. The World Health Organization (WHO) has pledged to support intensified vaccination drives and to monitor progress through its Immunisation Agenda 2030. However, financing gaps and political instability in the most affected regions remain major obstacles to achieving herd immunity and preventing future spikes.
