Jio Platforms Soars 21% in Historic Market Debut Following India's Largest IPO
Jio Platforms, the digital and telecom arm of billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries, experienced a spectacular 21% surge in its stock market debut on Wednesday. This dramatic rise followed the company’s successful completion of India’s largest and most subscribed Initial Public Offering (IPO), which raised $3.2 billion. The offering attracted an overwhelming response, with investor bids exceeding $77 billion, signaling robust confidence in the company’s growth trajectory. The shares opened at ₹1,358 (approximately $14), a significant jump from the IPO price of ₹1,119 (around $12). This valuation places Jio at approximately ₹12.5 trillion (about $131.9 billion), securing its position as India’s second-most valuable listed company, trailing only its parent, Reliance Industries, which is valued at roughly ₹16 trillion (around $168.6 billion). For context, when Meta and Google invested in 2020, Jio’s valuation was capped at ₹4.91 trillion (about $65 billion at the time), highlighting the substantial appreciation over the past six years. The IPO, conducted between October 21 and 22, saw bids for 22.19 times the available shares, with over 13.8 million applicants. This record-breaking subscription rate underscores the intense demand for equity in India’s largest telecom operator. Akash Ambani, Jio’s Managing Director, noted at the listing ceremony that the platform now serves more than 540 million customers. Since entering the crowded market in 2016 with free data offers, Jio has displaced major rivals like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, expanding its portfolio into broadband, cloud services, and artificial intelligence. Financially, Jio demonstrated strong momentum, reporting a profit of ₹300.5 billion (about $3.2 billion) on revenues of ₹1.47 trillion (around $15.5 billion) for the fiscal year ending March 2026. Both metrics grew by approximately 15% year-over-year. The company plans to allocate up to ₹275 billion (about $2.9 billion) of the IPO proceeds to repay debt at its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm, while the remainder will be directed toward general corporate purposes. Notably, existing investors such as Meta, Google, General Atlantic, and Silver Lake did not sell any shares in this offering, which consisted entirely of newly issued stock.
