Squarespace Cuts 19% of Workforce Amid Strategic Simplification
Squarespace, the website‑building platform, said on Nov 2, 2026 that it will lay off 19 percent of its staff – roughly 300 workers out of a total of 1,800 – as part of a “simplify‑and‑accelerate” strategy. In a statement to The Verge, spokesperson Jeff Seedman explained that the cuts are meant to streamline operations, sharpen priorities and enable faster execution as the company prepares for its next growth phase. He added that departing employees will receive 16 weeks of base salary and continued health‑care coverage through May 2027. The move comes just over two years after Squarespace’s high‑profile push into artificial intelligence. In 2024 the firm launched Blueprint AI, a tool that automatically generates website layouts, copy, blog posts and product descriptions. At the same time, private‑equity firm Permira completed its acquisition of the company, injecting capital but also raising expectations for profitability. Industry analysts see the layoffs as a signal that the AI‑driven growth has not yet translated into sustainable revenue streams. Competitors such as Wix and Shopify are also tightening budgets, suggesting a broader correction in the web‑services market after a period of rapid expansion. Looking ahead, Squarespace says the restructuring will position it to roll out new AI‑enhanced features more quickly and to focus on high‑margin enterprise customers. Observers will watch the company’s next earnings report for clues on whether the simplification yields the intended boost in profitability.
