In a landmark shift for the global transportation sector, electric trucks have officially crossed the 50% threshold in China’s heavy-duty vehicle market. According to recent data, electric big rigs accounted for 50.3% of all heavy trucks sold in the country during September. This milestone represents a significant acceleration in the adoption of zero-emission freight solutions, marking a decisive turning point in the decarbonization of logistics and long-haul transport.
The surge in electric truck sales is particularly striking given the broader market conditions. While the overall heavy-truck market in China experienced a contraction, shrinking by 21% year-on-year, the electric segment defied this trend with robust growth. Specifically, 33,100 electric heavy trucks were sold in a single month, representing a 37% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This divergence highlights a structural shift in buyer preference and regulatory alignment, where efficiency and environmental compliance are driving demand even in a challenging economic climate.
The implications of this market penetration extend directly to global energy markets. As the fleet of battery-electric and natural gas-powered trucks expands, the reliance on traditional fossil fuels is visibly eroding. Industry analysts indicate that China’s diesel demand is on track to fall by approximately 230,000 barrels per day this year. This substantial reduction is primarily attributed to the displacement of diesel engines by battery-electric and alternative fuel technologies in the commercial trucking sector, which has historically been the largest consumer of diesel fuel.
This transition underscores the rapid maturation of electric vehicle infrastructure and battery technology in the heavy-duty segment. The ability to sustain such high sales volumes despite a shrinking overall market suggests that electric trucks are no longer a niche alternative but are becoming the standard for new heavy-duty acquisitions. For the automotive and energy industries, this data signals that the era of diesel dominance in freight transport is rapidly coming to an end, with China leading the charge in this global energy transition.
