TikTok Accelerates Super App Ambitions with 'Must Eat' Guide and Payment Features
TikTok has officially announced the launch of its in-app restaurant guide, marking a significant milestone in its strategic evolution from a short-form video platform into a comprehensive "super app." This move, coupled with recent reports of a direct message payment feature, signals the company's aggressive intent to consolidate user digital activities within a single ecosystem. The new "Must Eat" feature leverages community data to provide curated restaurant recommendations, directly challenging established players like Yelp and Google Maps by integrating discovery and decision-making into the social feed. The "Must Eat" guide is powered by an analysis of over 40 million posts and comments, allowing users to browse restaurants by city, cuisine, price, and rating. This data-driven approach transforms TikTok from a passive content consumption platform into an active utility for everyday decisions. Furthermore, Bloomberg reported in August that TikTok is developing a feature to allow users to send money via direct messages, utilizing its existing TikTok Pay infrastructure already deployed in Southeast Asia. In March, Reuters reported that TikTok applied to Brazil’s central bank for approval to operate as a financial technology company, offering lending and payment services, further cementing its financial ambitions. This expansion reflects the "super app" model popularized in China by WeChat, which integrates social networking, messaging, payments, and app stores into one interface. By aiming to replicate this model globally, TikTok seeks to increase user engagement and open new revenue streams. The platform has already demonstrated its commercial viability through TikTok Shop, which saw US sales grow by 407% in 2024 and another 108% in 2025, reaching $15.82 billion. This growth has allowed TikTok to capture 18.2% of the total US social commerce market, a figure expected to rise to 24.1% by 2027. Beyond commerce, TikTok is expanding into travel and sports. The launch of TikTok GO in May allows users to book hotels and attractions directly within the app, competing with traditional travel agencies. Additionally, the "TikTok GamePlan" product and a dedicated FIFA World Cup hub enable users to access scores, highlights, and exclusive content without leaving the platform. These initiatives position TikTok not just as a social network, but as a primary destination for information, entertainment, and transactional services, fundamentally altering the competitive landscape for tech giants like Google and Amazon.
